To Joan
Summer of 1953
Love is not that of fear. It is not that of hate.
Nor is it the product of an artist.
Nor that of a bum.
Love is not fashioned by an engineer,
nor made by an architect,
or designed by a miller.
Love is not owned by the rich.
It is not possessed only by the poor.
It belongs not only to the old nor the young.
Love does not make us wealthy.
Neither does it make us poor.
Love makes us not healthy.
Neither does it make us sickly.
It makes us not beautiful nor does it make us ugly.
It gives us no food
.
BUT...
Love is all to those who know it.
Love makes us fear, hate, healthy, sickly, hungry, full, ugly, beautiful...
It is the basis of life.
It is the reason to live.
It is the reason to die.
It is the product of God.
Love is everything...
