OLD FLYER

At Letterman Army Hospital there was an old retired Air Force officer who had flown all sorts of airplanes in his life. He was confined to a wheelchair. I was there on a Lark three-wheeled electric scooter. So, the old flier wanted to go outside for some air.

We went slowly down the hallways to the exit. I suggested that we go about three-hundred yards to a grassy, shady park area. He said he was too slow for that, so I told him I would pull him.

I caught the arm of his chair and pulled the throttle wide open. He became very concerned and started yelling, “Slow down, you idiot! You are going too fast!” (Yeah, about 5 miles per hour, and he used to fly at speeds exceeding six hundred...)
