COFFEE CLASH

There was a McDonald’s about one and a half miles from my house when I lived in Redwood City. Monday through Friday several old timers would meet there about 10:00 o’clock each morning for coffee, crumpet, and fellowship. I was the only one in a wheel chair. Most of the others used some sort of walking aid, including one with a walker.

One day that bunch started deviling me about going around in the chair. I told them that I could get from my house to McDonald’s faster with the chair than they could in a car. They scoffed at me.

Soon, as you might guess, a test was set up - me in my manual, Everest & Jennings lightweight and my friend in his Buick. We started from my house on 10th Avenue and proceeded to McDonald’s. I beat him by three minutes. Of course I did not tell him that I took short cuts through parking lots and across rail tracks...
