Mrs Carter I believe the greatest teacher of all times taught English at Mansfield High School. That was Mrs. Anna K. Carter. She lived her life in such a way as to influence, not only her students, but every student and staff members in the school. The school must have had a door to Heaven, for that is where Angles are found, and Mrs. Carter was one. Mrs. Carter was a very small lady, standing only about 55 inches tall, and could not have weighed more than one hundred pounds. She was so quiet that one had to look to see where she was. I could never understand how she knew just when to be right alongside your desk, but at anytime I came across a problem that I did not understand, all I had to do was look up. She would be there. I do not recall that she ever raised her voice at anyone, yet we students were better behaved with her in charge than any other teacher in school. I believe that everyone just did not want Mrs. Carter to think bad of them. In Study Hall I was seated behind Marilyn Knight who had very long and beautiful hair. To prevent sitting on it, she would pull it up and let it fall over my desk directly behind her. It really did not bother me, and I would just divide it and put my book on the desk while studying. I often played with the hair in an unconscious way while working. Mrs. Carter noticed it, and said nothing, just gently started plating the girl's hair, and with hair pins, fastened it up on her head. Both Marilyn and I felt a little guilty about the entire thing, but we loved her for not embarrassing us. I was never a good a student in English. It was the other things in life that she taught, in her own way, that really counts. I still love that dear lady, and so does many other ex-students of Mansfield High School.
