THE ALL OUT AMERICAN
The city of Brownsville, Texas sits at the point where Mexico, Texas and the Gulf come together. It is a haven for people who live in motor homes and travel trailers, the so called Snow Birds. Most of these folks are wealthy, and the economy of the area is based on the many R.V. parks located there.
Most of the labor in the area is Mexican nationals, who come across the border in the mornings, work all day, then go back across in the evenings. Such a man was Carlos.
Carlos was a gardener and took care of the grounds of a large park. He was a very good man, and was always ready and willing to help any resident in need. Everyone loved him, and considered him a friend.
Carlos loved the United States, and if anyone said anything bad about it, Carlos would become upset. He was the first to stand and place his hand over his heart when the Stars and Stripes passed. Everyone knew how Carlos felt about America, and guarded their speech when he was near.
The residents of the park decided to have a picnic, and invited Carlos and his family to attend. After a fine BBQ, all the men sat down and started talking. Someone made a remark about the government, and Carlos spoke up.
"The United States is the greatest country in the world!" Carlos stated. "I love America. She is a gift of God!"
"Carlos, you are a Mexican. Why do you feel that way?" someone asked.
"Ah, Senior, where else could a person, sick, no money, hungry, tired, and no home, be walking down the street. Rich man stop his car, have you get in, buy you food, buy you medicine, buy you clothes, pay for nice hotel, and give you $100. Where else could this happen but in America?"
Everyone was amazed at his story. Carlos smiled as he sat with tears in his eyes, looking at the other men.
"Carlos, this happened to you?" someone asked.
"Oh, no, Senior," Carlos answered, "But it happened to my sister!"
