BIG SISTER DOES

I have one of those squeeze-bulb horns on my power wheelchair, not to demand the right of way, but because the kids get a kick out of it. Kids will stare when I drive by, so I squeak the horn at them They almost always smile and wave. Sometimes they will talk to me.

Once I was going through a residential area where there is a lot of kids. There were several adults sitting under a tree in lawn chairs and kids playing all about. The kids were looking so I squeezed the bulb. The kids smiled and one little boy, about four years old, said, Hi, mister.

I stopped and said hello. Several kids came out to me and stood around (and me without any Life Savers!) I asked the boy, Would you like to have a wheelchair like this? He shook his head yes. What if you could not walk and had to go everywhere in one of these?

My big sister does, he said. She never did walk cause her legs dont work.

I looked over at the adults and a man got up and came over. Our oldest daughter has MD, he said. She is nine now and stays in the hospital. He motioned toward the boy and said, He never forgets his sister.

All I could say was, I pray God will bless you and yours, Sir, and went down the street without looking back. I did not want them to see an old man cry...
